Match Report

Undefeated Gornal travelled to Aldridge to face the tough Walsall side looking for the revenge after the mauling they received last times these two sides met, Gornal got off to a very poor start, with poor passing and communication allowing the home side to have opportunities without directly threatening the Gornal goal. An early substitution and a slight change in play resulted in Gornal taking control and had several opportunities to score the first goal. A pass down the left flank by Gemma Moss-Hamill released winger Chelsea Fellows whose cross was met by Katie Moore on the edge of the six yard box but the keeper covered well forcing her to screw her shot wide. Rachel Letford then laid the ball off to Lauren Keen whose 20 yard effort went harmlessly over the bar. Gornal pressure began to tell and Lauren Keen laid an inviting pass into the path of Letford who slotted calmly past the advancing keeper for the first goal. Five minutes later Gemma Moss from a throwing gave the ball to Letford who, with some nice footwork, volleyed it into the top corner and four minutes before half time a 25 yard shot from a freekick by Beth Arrowsmith was spilled by the keeper and Gemma Hamill Moss was first to react to bury into the net.
Half Time score was 3-0 and the game was already looking beyond Walsall Phoenix.

In the second half Walsall had more chances but some fine defending by the impressive back four meant that keeper Sam Brough wasn’t required to make a save and this was the cornerstone which gave the Gornal lionesses their fourth clean sheet in five games. Letford was to be on the score sheet another three times, firstly with a downward header from an in swinging Arrowsmith Corner. Her fourth goal and Gornals fifth was from great work down the left by Chelsea Fellows and Gornal saved the best for last which was amazing team goal. Started by Letford with a flick out to Katie Moore on the left wing who left her marker for dead with an exquisite back heeled pass to Gemma Hamill-Moss on the edge of the area who provided a return pass to Moore to run onto passing into Keen to take the initial shot which was saved by the keeper only for Letford to follow up and score her fifth goal of the game.

Gornals impressive unbeaten run continues and next they face a tough game against last years Division 2 champions, Wednesfield, in the open cup.
