Match Report

[metaslider id=888]

Gornal kicked off this first match of the new BCWL premier league season and for the first few minutes the ball was going back and forth with neither team getting it down and playing football.
After 4 minutes Gornal began to settle and a neat move between Hamill-Moss, Harris and Letford forced the first corner of the game, Beth Arrowsmith swung the ball to the near post and Hamill-Moss glanced her header across the keeper and into the net
Straight from the kick off Gornal pressed the Warwick midfield winning the ball back on the left wing. There was nowhere to progress down the left and the ball was retained working it across the field for Keisha to play a ball through to Rachel who ran into the area and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to make the score 2-0.
Warwick was offering very little in attack relying on their centre forward to chase down the Gornal back four. From a throw in deep in Gornal half centre back Steph received the ball and played into Katie in midfield. She had plenty of time and space to put an inch perfect through ball beyond the Warwick defence for Cheadle to run onto producing a stinging drive which the goalkeeper parried out and was then unable to find Drew in the middle and Warwick cleared the danger.
From the Warwick keepers kick the ball was won by Sasa who laid the ball back to O Callaghan to play forward to Letford who powered past the covering defender and delivered an inch perfect ball into the six yard box for Harris to pass into the net.
Gornal continued to probe through the nine man Warwick defence but a combination of poor final ball, wayward finishing and a number of saves by the Warwick keeper, including one excellent double save from a Letford pile driver recovering well to keep out Harris’s follow up from close range, kept the score at 3-0 going in to half time.

Warwick restarted the match and good passing interchange saw them progress to the edge of the Gornal penalty area winning a free kick but the delivery was poor and the ball went behind for a goal kick.
From the goal kick Gornal created their first chance of the second half with good inter play between Sasa, Letford and Dixon created a clear opening for Letford only to screw her shot wide.
A minute later Dixon won a free kick on the edge of the Warwick area and Arrowsmith floated the ball towards the far post and over the keepers head to score Gornal’s fourth on 50 minutes.
On 55 minutes the pace of Dixon almost took her past the covering Warwick defence but she was bundled over 5 yards outside the area. Arrowsmith again took the free kick but his time saw the effort cannon off the cross bar and behind for a goal kick.
On 65 minutes a quick throw in by Green released Letford whose swerving effort was parried onto the post by the Warwick keeper only for Dixon to follow up and plant the ball into the empty net.

In the 75 minute Katie Moore performed a couple of her trademark drag backs to leave the Warwick defence bemused and she floated a perfect pass over the Warwick centre backs for Harris to run onto and lob the ball over the advancing keeper.
Gornals final goal arrived in the 75th minute when a Warwick goal kick was picked up by Cheadle. Her drag back gave her the space to cross to Moore on the right side of the Warwick penalty area. Moore cut the ball back inside the covering defender before finishing left footed into the corner of the Warwick net.
Gornal will get a much sterner test next week when they face West Midlands Regional premier side Crusaders in the 2nd qualifying round of the SSE Womens FA cup
